In our country, there are species of Polyphylla and Melolontha genus that damage the roots of various fruit saplings and trees and vines.

These two harmful species are often confused with each other. One is Polyphylla fullo (June beetle) and the other is Melolontha melolontha (May beetle). Both pests are from the Scarabeidae family, and their life cycle, damage and control are generally very similar.

The larvae of both pests are plump, white, curved C-shaped and feed on plant roots. With the warming of the weather, the adults begin to emerge from the soil in April-May.

Body length in adults is 28-40 mm. Males have fan-shaped antennae. Body color is completely covered with small chambers and very often white scales on a reddish brown background. Adults fly after sunset in June-July and have a tendency to come to the light. They usually give offspring every 2-2.5 years.

The main damaging larvae eat fruit saplings and roots of trees. The presence of 1 larva on the root of a plant in nurseries can cause significant damage. If the feeding damage reaches the cambium, the plant dies. Therefore, the pest is much more important for nurseries.

Apple, strawberry, hazelnut, vineyard, grass fields, ornamental plants, pear, plum, cherry, quince, peach and apricot are its favorite hosts. The damage is more in pome fruit varieties and sandy humus soils.
