As it is known, the vast majority of our country's soils are low in organic matter, which can negatively affect their productivity and thus the yield per unit area. Organic matter has many benefits such as improving the physical properties of soils, increasing the availability of nutrients, and increasing microorganism activities.
For this reason, considering the negative effects of the decrease of organic matter, which is low in our country's soil, due to increasing soil cultivation activities, organic resources must be brought back to agricultural areas. In addition, these organic-origin resources must be managed in the most accurate way in order to prevent possible environmental problems that may be caused by animal, wastewater-based and organic-based urban wastes that arise due to the increasing urban life.
Organic Fertilizer Sources
Among the most important organic origin raw materials used in plant nutrition and soil improver;
- Farm Fertilizers,
- Biogas Plant Residues,
- Waste Water Treatment Sludge,
- Urban Waste Compost,
- Leonardite, countable.
These materials show significant differences from each other, especially in terms of their chemical properties. Farm manure, which is among these, is evaluated by using either on-farm composting or in the production of electrical energy from biogas and biogas with the help of fermentation with the help of anaerobic bacteria in biogas facilities.
The remaining organic material after biogas production, on the other hand, is used as a quality fertilization and/or soil improvement material with its humic+fulvic acid content. Leonardite is a soft, black or brown, shiny, glassy mineraloid that dissolves easily in alkaline solutions. It is the oxidation product of lignite processed close to the surface. It is a rich source of humic+fulvic acid (up to 90%) and is used as a soil conditioner. It is also used as a raw material for organomineral fertilizers in our country.
Toros Tarım and Organic-Organomineral Fertilizer Production
Considering the demands of the developing organic and organomineral fertilizer market in Turkey, Toros Tarım started to take its steps in this field by launching its first organomineral fertilizers in 2017. Using leonardite raw material in its first organomineral fertilizers, Toros Tarım continues to produce and market composite fertilizers with different nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium ratios that meet the mandatory 15% OM according to the latest Organic and Organomineral Fertilizer Regulations (Table 1).
In order to increase its market share, Toros Tarım, which wants to increase its capacity and product diversity and to secure the supply of raw materials with a more stable content in the sector, purchased 70% of the biogas and organic fertilizer producer Gönen Yenilenen Enerji Üretim A.Ş.
The plant, which was established in 2011 to produce electricity, humic acid and organic fertilizer from biogas, uses 100% domestic and completely environmentally friendly technologies, which are the product of intensive R&D work. In the facility, which has an installed electricity production capacity of 3.62 MW and an annual production capacity of 15,000 tons of solid organic and 10,000 tons of liquid organic fertilizers, the investment for an organomineral fertilizer production facility with an annual capacity of 35,000 tons was completed with the additional investments made after the merger.
